After The Meeting That Went Wrong
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
That did not go the way you wanted.
You are sitting with it now. In the car, or at your desk, or in the bathroom with the door locked for a minute. Replaying it. What you said. What you should have said. What they said. The tone of it. The way the room shifted. Your face still feels warm, maybe. Your chest is tight.
First... breathe.
One breath. In through the nose. Long and slow. Fill the lungs all the way.
Now out. Through the mouth. Let it be audible. Let your body hear itself exhale.
Again. In.
And out. Slower this time.
Good.
Here is what is happening right now. Your nervous system is still in that meeting. Your body does not know it is over. The adrenaline, the cortisol, the alertness... it is all still circulating, looking for a threat that is no longer in front of you. This is biology, not weakness. Your body is trying to protect you. It just has not caught up yet.
So help it. Feel your feet on the floor. Press them down slightly. Feel the solidity underneath. You are here now. Not in that room. Not in that conversation. Here.
Put your hands somewhere you can feel them. On your legs. On the steering wheel. On the edge of the sink. Feel the texture under your fingers. This is real. This is now.
Now. The replaying. The loop in your head. What you wish you had said. How you think you came across. The cringe. The frustration.
Let it be there. Do not push it away. But also... do not let it be the whole truth. Because it is not. A bad meeting is a bad meeting. It is not a verdict on who you are. It is not proof that you are not good enough. It is one conversation, in one room, on one day. That is all.
You will have a hundred more conversations. Most of them will go fine. Some will go beautifully. This one did not. And you are still standing.
If you need to process it, you will. Later. When the adrenaline has faded and your thinking brain is back online. That is when the useful reflection happens. Not now. Now is for landing. For coming back to your body. For reminding yourself that one difficult hour does not define an entire day.
Here is something useful about the replay. The version of the meeting you are running in your head right now is not accurate. It is the catastrophising version, where everything landed badly, where your face said the wrong thing, where everyone went away thinking the worst. But you do not have the data for that version. You have your own experience from inside it, which is always the most distorted view. The other people in that room were also inside their own experience. Worried about how they came across. Processing what was said. Probably not holding you in the harsh unflattering light your anxiety has projected onto them. The story you are telling yourself about the meeting is not the whole story.
Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Soften your hands.
You handled it. Maybe not perfectly. But you were there, and you tried, and that counts for more than you are giving yourself credit for right now.
Let it settle. Then move on. Gently.
