Bamboo Grove After Rainfall

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The rain has stopped. And the bamboo is still singing.

Droplets collected in the leaves during the storm are finding their way down. One by one. Leaf to leaf. A cascade of tiny impacts, each one a soft tap against the next surface, the next leaf, the next stem. The whole grove is dripping in rhythm, a thousand tiny percussions playing themselves out in no particular order.

You are standing at the edge of it. The air is washed. That is the only word for it. The rain has taken everything heavy and dusty and stale from the atmosphere and replaced it with something so clean it almost tastes of metal. Each breath is a cool, crisp revelation.

The bamboo rises straight up from the ground, impossibly tall and impossibly thin. Green stems the thickness of your wrist, climbing thirty, forty feet into a canopy that filters the light into something ethereal. Not sunlight exactly. Something between light and water. A green-gold luminescence that moves and shifts as the wind passes through.

And the sound. This is what makes a bamboo grove unlike any other place on earth. When the wind blows, the stems sway. And when they sway, they knock against each other. A hollow, wooden, resonant knock that echoes through the grove like a hundred distant drums. Between the knocks, the creak of flexing stems. The hiss of leaves rubbing. The drip of water from the rain that just passed.

It is a concert. No conductor. No score. Just physics and wind and ten thousand bamboo stems doing what they have been doing, undisturbed, for decades.

Walk into it. The ground is packed earth, darkened by the rain, scattered with fallen bamboo leaves that are long and narrow and the colour of pale gold. They cushion every step. The air between the stems is still, protected from the wind by the density of the grove. Like being inside a living room made entirely of green columns.

Run your hand along a stem as you walk. It is smooth. Cooler than you expected. The segments are obvious, each one a distinct section, like the rings of a telescope. At the joints, small branches sprout outward, each one carrying a spray of narrow leaves that move in the slightest breeze.

Look up. The canopy is a lattice. Green on green on green, with slivers of white sky showing through. A single drop of rain falls from somewhere above and lands on your face. Cool. A tiny blessing from the storm that just passed.

There is a stillness here that is not quiet. The grove is full of sound, but the sound is not noise. It is pattern. Rhythm. The earth breathing through the hollow chambers of its own creation.

Stay here. In the green. In the dripping. In the knock and creak and hiss of something ancient and deeply simple.

Breathe in the washed air. Let it clean something inside you too.
