Cat Choosing You
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
The cat made the decision. Not you.
This is the first thing to understand about a cat coming to you and staying. They are not performing. They are not doing you a social favour. Cats have no interest in social favours. The cat assessed the available options, which include the entire room and every person in it and the warm spot by the radiator, and chose you. This tells you something.
You probably did not do anything specific. You were not the most enthusiastic person in the room. You were not the one waving your hand and making desperate tooth-click noises. That person has been conspicuously ignored. The cat walked past them with the serenity of something with no need to explain its preferences and came to you.
The arrival. The circling if they circle, the way cats move around a target they are evaluating, gathering information from smell and the particular angles of approach. Then the stillness of decision. Then, slowly, the lowering. The sitting. And then, if you are truly chosen, the weight. The specific, surprising weight of a cat landing in your lap.
Do not move dramatically. The cat has made a provisional decision. Provisional because cats deal in provisional decisions. The conditions under which they chose you remain in effect only as long as you behave as you were behaving when they chose you. Changes are permitted. Sudden movements are not.
The purring. You may or may not get this. Purring is not guaranteed. It indicates contentment, yes, but also communication of other states that researchers still debate. But if the purr arrives, it is a physical event. A vibration you can feel through your legs or your hand if your hand is resting on the cat. The specific frequency of it is physiologically calming. Not metaphorically. actually calming. There is research on this, on the frequency of cat purring and its effect on the human nervous system.
The cat's eyes, if they open to look at you, will do the slow blink. The cat slow blink is a signal that requires returning. Slow blink back. This is the cat's language for: I am not a threat, I am comfortable with you. You are speaking it back. A communication so simple that it predates language and will outlast it.
Notice the trust in the position. A cat sleeping in someone's lap is a cat that has exposed its softest, least defended surface. The throat, the belly, the places that vulnerability lives. They do this only with sources of genuine safety. You were assessed and designated safe. By an animal that has survived by accurately assessing threat. By an animal with no reason to flatter.
The warmth of them. The specific temperature of a cat's body, just above your own. The rise and fall of the breathing. The occasional tensing and releasing of the feet, kneading perhaps, the comfort behaviour they learned as kittens that they bring to places they feel safest.
You were chosen. By something with very high standards. By something that owes you nothing and chose you anyway.
Rest in that. The cat has no agenda. It just wants to be warm and safe and near someone reliable.
You are those things. The cat knows it and has confirmed it.
