Coffee Before The Phone
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
Here is a small rebellion.
The phone is right there. On the nightstand. Or maybe still under your pillow from last night. Its screen is dark but it is already waiting. It has things for you. Messages, notifications, news, the endless scroll. It knows you will reach for it. You always do. Everyone does.
But not yet.
Today, you are going to do something radical in its simplicity. You are going to make coffee first. Or tea. Whatever your morning drink is. And you are going to sit with it. Just sit. Before the world gets in.
Get up slowly. Feel the floor under your feet. Cool or warm, depending on the season, depending on your home. Walk to the kitchen. Not quickly. There is no rush. The only appointment you have right now is with a kettle.
Listen to the water fill. That hollow sound that changes pitch as the level rises. Put it on. And wait.
Waiting is the practice. Right here. Not filling the silence with a screen. Just standing in your kitchen, maybe looking out the window. Maybe noticing the quality of the light today. Is it grey? Bright? Is there frost on anything? Or is the air already warm?
You do not need to have thoughts about this. Noticing is enough.
The water boils. Pour it. The sound of liquid into a cup. The first curl of steam. If it is coffee, there is that smell. You know the one. Rich and dark and somehow promising. If it is tea, the colour slowly blooming through the water. A small, quiet transformation happening right in front of you.
Take the cup with both hands. Feel the warmth through the ceramic. This warmth is yours. Nobody sent it to you. Nobody scheduled it. You made it yourself, for yourself, before the day could claim you.
Sit down somewhere. Not at your desk. Somewhere that does not have a purpose attached to it. A chair by the window. The edge of the bed. The kitchen counter.
Take the first sip.
And just... be here.
The phone can wait. It has always waited. Five minutes from now, the same messages will be there. The same news. The same feed. Nothing will have changed. But you will have changed. Because you gave yourself this pause. This space between sleep and the world.
Notice what your mind does when it is not being fed information. It might wander. It might plan. It might replay something from yesterday. That is fine. Let it move. You do not need to control it. Just notice it. Like watching clouds. They drift. They change shape. They pass.
Finish your drink slowly. There is no prize for getting through it quickly.
And when the cup is empty, take one more breath. A deep one. In through the nose. Out through the mouth.
now you can pick up the phone. But you will pick it up differently. As someone who already had a moment of peace today. Someone who already chose themselves first.
That is not a small thing. That is everything.
