Conversation With Future Self
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
Someone is waiting at the end of a path. And they are you. Just further on.
Walk toward them. The path ahead is clear. The future self stands in a quality of light that is not quite present light, warmer or calmer, the particular quality of imagined futures when we allow ourselves good ones. They are waiting without impatience. They have time. They came specifically for this.
They look like you. But the face carries something yours does not yet carry. Not age necessarily, though that too. Something more specific: the having come through. The knowledge that what you are currently in was something that was survived, was navigated, was eventually got through. Not perfectly. But through.
They are glad to see you. This is what future selves feel, if you allow them: not pity for the difficulty of where you are, not frustration that you are still there, but gladness at seeing the earlier version who was carrying all of that before knowing how it resolved. There is love in it. The specific love of recognizing yourself.
Ask them something. What is it you most want to know from the perspective of further on? The simplest question is often: does it get better? And the future self, yours, not a generic one, answers from your specific trajectory. And the answer, if you allow the visualization to give it, tends toward: yes. Not perfectly. Not without cost. But yes.
Or ask something more specific. The decision you cannot make. The fear that seems permanently true. The relationship or the work or the identity question. The future self knows the shape of how you got through this. They do not tell you everything, details are not the point, but they tell you enough.
They might say: you are more capable than you believe right now. Not because capability is linear or because the difficulty is unreal, but because capability is what the difficulty makes, and you do not know yet what it has made in you.
They might say: the things you are afraid of losing were not lost. Or: the things you did lose were survivable, which you could not have believed in the moment. Or simply: I am all right. Which is what you needed to hear.
Sit with them for a moment. There is no hurry. The path between now and then is real but the visit is outside its timeline. Just sit. With the person you are becoming. Let them look at you, as you are, in all your current struggle and uncertainty and effort, and let their looking be kind.
Before you part, they hand you something. A word or an image or a feeling that is theirs to give and yours to take. It may not make immediate sense. Carry it anyway. Things from these meetings often resolve over days.
Walk back. The path you came down is the path back. And the ground is firmer than when you arrived, because you know something you did not know before.
You are going to be okay. Your future self told you so.
And your future self has been there. They know.
