Crystal Cave

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The cave is singing.

Not a melody. Not words. A hum. A deep, resonant vibration that you feel in your sternum before you hear it with your ears. It lives in the walls. In the floor. In the crystals that grow from every surface in clusters and columns and single, perfect points. The entire cave is a tuning fork, vibrating at a frequency that is below music and above silence.

The crystals are enormous. The largest ones are taller than you. Translucent pillars of mineral, hexagonal, perfect, their surfaces catching any light and splitting it into rainbows. They grow from the floor and descend from the ceiling and sometimes they meet in the middle, forming columns that have been growing toward each other for millions of years, finally touching, finally becoming one thing.

The light source is unclear. There is no sun down here, no lamp, no fire. But the cavern is not dark. The crystals themselves seem to hold light. A soft, internal glow. White in some. Pale violet in others. A faint rose in the ones near the thermal vents where warm air rises from some deeper cave system below. Together, they illuminate the space in a light that has no shadows, a gentle omnidirectional radiance that comes from everywhere and nowhere.

Touch one. Press your palm against the flat face of a crystal column. It is cool. Smooth. And you can feel the vibration. Through your hand, up your arm, into your chest. The frequency is familiar. Like a note you have always known but never heard played. Your heart rate adjusts. Slows. Matches. Your breathing deepens without you deciding to.

The hum changes as you move through the cave. Each chamber has its own pitch. Walk through a narrow passage and the frequency rises. Enter a large cavern and it drops. The crystals of different sizes produce different tones, and the architecture of the cave determines how those tones combine. You are walking through a chord. A harmony written in stone and mineral.

A pool occupies the centre of the largest chamber. The water is perfectly still and perfectly clear. The crystals growing at its edges extend beneath the surface and continue growing down, into the depths, undisturbed. The reflection is so precise that the chamber appears to extend downward forever, crystal above mirrored by crystal below, a symmetry that makes your mind go quiet.

Sit at the pool's edge. The stone is warm from the geothermal heat. The air is clean and mineral-rich. Each breath tastes faintly of salt and stone and something sweet, the chemical signature of the crystals themselves, dissolving into the air in concentrations too small to measure but present enough to notice.

The hum continues. It has been continuing for millennia. Before anyone found this cave. Before anyone walked this earth. The crystals have been growing and vibrating and singing to empty chambers for millions of years, beautiful for no audience, resonant for no listener.

Until now. Until you.

Let the vibration enter your body. Let the light enter your eyes. Let the cave hold you the way it holds its crystals. Gently. Perfectly. For as long as you are willing to stay.
