Dissolving Into Warmth

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The warmth is all around you. You do not need to maintain your edges tonight.

All day, the edges have been necessary. The boundaries of the self, which the world requires, the surface that says: this ends here and other things begin. The body's ability to contain itself, to hold its own shape, to maintain the tension of being present and coherent in a world that requires both.

Tonight, the edges are not needed. Let them go.

Start with the hands. The hands are at rest. The tension in the muscles that have been gripping and holding and typing and touching all day, let it go. The fingers uncurl. The palms open. The hands stop being instruments and become soft warm shapes on the mattress. The boundary of the hands dissolving toward the warmth of the air and the surface beneath them.

The arms. The muscles that have been at work. Letting the tension run out of them downward, toward the mattress, away. The arms become heavy and soft. The weight of them going down.

The chest. The place that has been taut with the day's business. The breath dropping deeper as the chest softens. In and out without assistance. The lungs filling and emptying without the overlay of tension that has been there all day. A cleaner breath. A slower one.

The jaw. Always the jaw. Let it go. The teeth parting. The jaw going slack, which is not a failure of anything. It is the face achieving its actual resting state, which requires sleep to allow. The face softening into the pillow, giving its weight to what is holding it.

The whole body now. Each part that has released joining the released whole. A warmth that is building, not from outside, but from the surrender of tension, which generates warmth, as letting go always does. The body warming itself through its own release.

Warm. Soft. Heavy.

Begin at the feet. The soles of the feet, the last tired parts to receive rest. Feel the warmth arriving there, spreading from the arch and heel upward. The muscles of the foot releasing their small tensions, the dozens of tiny adjustments the feet make all day now finally allowed to stop. The warmth moving up through the ankles and into the lower legs, which carry more than people acknowledge, the constant micro-corrections of standing and moving, all of it dropping away now. The calves softening. The knees finding their unclenched resting position. The warmth continuing upward through the body, unhurried, replacing tension with its own quality as it travels. A slow filling from the ground up.

The distinction between you and the warmth is softening. This is not loss of self. This is trust. The relaxation of the effort of being. Brief, available each night, the hour or the minutes before sleep when the body, given permission, dissolves its edges into the surrounding warmth.

Warm above. Warm below. Warm within. The temperature consistent. The dark consistent. The quiet consistent. All the conditions that say to the ancient body: sleep. All saying it at once. All confirmed. All true.

Warm.

The warmth has you now. Not gripping. holding.

The warmth has been here all along. You are just inside it.

Go.
