Dog Sleeping Against You
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
The weight of it. That is the first thing. The particular warm weight.
A dog asleep against you occupies a category of comfort that is difficult to explain to someone who has not experienced it. It is the combination of warmth and weight and the slow rhythm of sleeping breath, and the knowledge that the animal chose this position, chose your proximity, chose you as the safest available landscape to sleep against.
Dogs do nothing unconsciously. When a dog finds you and settles into sleep against your leg or your side or your feet, it is a deliberate decision made in the clear-eyed way of a creature with no subtext. Safe. Warm. Want to be here. Decision made.
The breath. Watch the chest rise and fall if you can see it. Slower than your own breathing, usually. Dogs in deep sleep breathe with the unhurried regularity of something with no outstanding obligations. The occasional deeper breath, a sigh, the complete exhale of a body that has decided all is well.
And the sounds. A dog in the rem depth of sleep makes sounds. Small sounds. Half-barks. Vowel sounds. The mouth moving slightly. Whatever they dream about requires vocal participation, which means they dream with feeling, which means the sleeping dog against you is having an experience you will never know the content of. Running somewhere. Finding something. Being with people they recognize.
The twitching of the legs. The chase through dreamed landscape, the muscles firing just enough to hint at the movement without producing it. This is the most affecting part. The animal running somewhere it cannot take you.
Do not move. This is the rule of a sleeping dog. Not because movement will hurt them, but because the moment has a quality that deserves preservation. The warmth and pressure of their body against yours, the complete trust embedded in the position, the entirely uncomplicated nature of what this is: safety and comfort and companionship.
The dog requires nothing from you right now. Does not need you to be more eloquent or more successful or more composed. Does not hold any history of failures. Does not compare you to other options. Has decided, with the clean certainty of an animal that does not second-guess itself, that this, here, with you, is where it wants to be.
You are, to this animal, the best available place. That is not a small thing. You were chosen, in the way that sleeping animals choose their landscape, which is completely and without reservation.
Let the warmth of it stay. The familiar weight. The soft, slow sound of an animal running through some good dream.
Be here too. Be in this warmth.
You were chosen. Rest in that for a while.
