Everyone Under This Sky
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
Look up. Or imagine looking up.
The sky above you is the same sky above everyone. Every person on this road, in this city, in this time zone. The same atmosphere. The same weather. The same slow rotation of the earth beneath all of us.
And every one of them is trying.
The woman driving the car beside you, or walking past you on the pavement, or sitting three seats away on the train. She woke up this morning with something on her mind. A worry, a hope, a plan, a loss. Something she has not told anyone about. She is navigating a life just as complicated as yours, with just as many contradictions, just as many unsent messages and unresolved feelings and moments of quiet courage that nobody saw.
The man at the counter. The one who looked tired. Or the one who was short with you, or impatient, or distracted. He carries something too. Maybe his father is sick. Maybe his marriage is ending. Maybe he slept two hours. Maybe he is simply having the kind of day where the world feels like too much and his coping mechanisms are not working.
None of this excuses bad behaviour. But it explains it. Almost always.
Widen the lens further. This city. All of it. The apartments stacked with lives. The houses with their different coloured doors. The hospitals where someone is being born right now and someone is dying. The schools where children are learning something for the first time. The offices where people sit quietly wondering whether this is what life was supposed to feel like.
All of them under this sky. All of them breathing the same air. All of them waking up every day and doing their best, or their worst, or something in between, with whatever they have.
This is not about sympathy. It is about recognition. The simple, staggering recognition that you are not alone. Not in your struggles. Not in your hopes. Not in that strange middle-of-the-night feeling where you wonder what the point of everything is.
Someone else is feeling that right now. Somewhere in this city. Under this same sky.
Send them warmth. Not specifically, you do not know who they are. Just... generally. A pulse of goodwill moving outward from you like a stone dropped in water. May the people around me find what they need today. May the ones who are struggling feel less alone. May the ones who are hurting know that it will not always feel this way.
You cannot fix the world. But you can widen your heart by one degree. And a heart that is wider by one degree sees differently. Treats the cashier differently. Drives differently. Listens differently.
That is not nothing. Multiplied across a city, across a million people each widening by one degree, it is everything.
We are all here. Together. Under one sky. Trying.
That connects us more than we think.
