First Light
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
The room is still dark.
Not completely. There is a thin line of light at the edge of the curtain. Blue-grey. The kind that only exists for a few minutes before the sun properly rises. You are awake. Not because of an alarm. Not because something startled you. Your body just... decided it was time.
Do not move yet.
Stay exactly where you are. Feel the weight of the blanket. The warmth underneath it. The pillow holding the shape of your sleep. This is the quietest your world will be today. Right here. Right now. Before anyone else in the house stirs. Before the first notification. Before the kettle. Before the day begins to fill with everything it will ask of you.
Listen.
If you are very still, you can hear the house itself. The faint tick of something cooling or warming. Maybe a bird outside, testing its voice. Maybe nothing at all. Just the sound of a world that has not yet started moving.
This moment belongs to nobody but you.
There is no task attached to it. No expectation. You do not need to be productive right now. You do not need to be anything at all. You are just a person, warm and breathing, watching the first light of a new day slowly widen across the ceiling.
Now. Gently. Take one slow breath in through your nose.
Feel your chest rise. Feel the air cool at the back of your throat.
And let it go. Slowly. Like you are breathing out the last traces of whatever you were dreaming.
Good.
As this light grows, so does a question. Not a demanding one. A quiet one. The kind that arrives like mist rather than knocking.
What do you want to carry into this day?
Not your to-do list. Not your obligations. Something deeper than that. A quality. A feeling. Something you want threaded through the hours ahead of you like a colour through fabric.
Maybe it is patience. The kind where nothing feels rushed. Where you give each thing the time it actually needs.
Maybe it is presence. The ability to be here, fully, in each conversation, each task, each small moment that would otherwise blur into the next.
Maybe it is kindness. Toward yourself first. The decision that today, the voice inside your head speaks gently.
Whatever it is... hold it. Not tightly. Loosely. Like holding a bird in open palms.
The light at the curtain is brighter now. A soft gold beginning to push through the blue. The day is arriving whether you are ready or not. But you are. Because you gave yourself this. These few minutes before the world got loud.
When you are ready, move slowly. Sit up. Feel your feet meet the floor.
And carry that one word, that one intention, with you. Through the morning. Through the afternoon. Through every small decision and every quiet moment.
This day has not happened yet. It is still yours to shape.
Begin gently.
