Havana At Dusk

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

Havana does not hurry. And at dusk, it never has.

The light is everything here at this hour. The Caribbean sun dropping toward the sea turns the whole city amber. The buildings, colonial and faded, absorb this light and give it back at a slightly different frequency, warmer, more personal, as if the walls have been memorizing decades of sunsets and are releasing them all at once.

Walk along the Malecón where it is happening. The seawall, long and low, the waves hitting the other side and sending spray across the road. On this side of the wall: the city. The old American cars in their impossible colours, red and turquoise and cream, moving through the amber light as though time has different rules here.

Music. This is important. Havana does not let you forget that music is everywhere. From an upper window, a radio. From a doorway, a guitar. From somewhere down the block, the particular percussion of something being played for joy rather than performance. The city has always made music for itself first. The rest of the world discovered it later.

People settling into the evening. The shift from the day's work to the night's life happens here with more ceremony than in most cities. The chairs appearing on the doorsteps. The conversations beginning. The rum somewhere. The cigar somewhere. The distinctive smell of both, specific to this city, specific to this hour, making the air distinct.

The buildings. So beautiful in their damage. The grandeur of the old architecture, the Baroque and the Art Deco and the Spanish Colonial, held together with improvisation and paint in colours that do not apologise for being bright even as they fade. The decay is not neglect in the usual sense. It is maintenance at a different rate. The bones are there.

Stop at the seawall. Face the water. The sun is very low now. The sea is silver and then orange at the horizon. A container ship on its way somewhere, a dark shape against the light. The Caribbean expanding in every direction, the rest of the world on the other side of it.

The city behind you is gathering its night. The lights are coming on in the buildings that have lights to come on. The sounds are becoming the specific sounds of Havana at night, which are different from the sounds of any other city at night, more musical, more human, more likely to become dancing.

Something about this city teaches you about beauty under constraint. About how music comes from what is available. About how warmth survives in the spaces that more fortunate places do not know they have sacrificed.

Watch the sun take the last of its gold away. The city will make its own now.

It does. It always has.
