High Alpine Meadow
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
You climbed above the clouds.
Below you, where the world should be, there is a white ocean. Thick, silent, rolling slowly. The valleys, the towns, the roads, everything you left behind is hidden under a blanket of cloud that stretches to the horizon in every direction. And you are standing above it. In sunlight. In thin, brilliant air. On a meadow that exists between rock and sky.
The grass is short and tough, the kind that grows at altitude where the wind is constant and the seasons are compressed into a few furious months of growth. But it is alive. And scattered through it, wildflowers. Tiny, determined, impossibly colourful. Blue gentians. Yellow buttercups. Purple saxifrage. Each one a small act of defiance against the altitude and the cold.
The air is thin. You can feel it. Each breath requires a fraction more effort. Not unpleasant. Just noticeable. And with each breath, the purity of it hits you. No pollution. No dust. No exhaust. Just oxygen and altitude and the faint metallic taste of high places.
The sun is closer here. Not literally, but it feels that way. Brighter. Stronger. Warmer on your face despite the cool air. The kind of sunlight that feels like a hand on your cheek.
The mountains around you are enormous. Rock and snow and ice. Their peaks catch the light differently as the day moves. Pink at dawn. White at noon. Gold now, in the afternoon. The glaciers that cling to their faces glow blue where the ice is ancient and compressed. A blue that does not exist at sea level.
A marmot whistles. A sharp, clear call that echoes off the rock faces and comes back to you slightly delayed. The marmot alarm call. It has seen you. It is telling the others. You stand still and eventually, from behind a rock, a round face appears. Small ears. Bright eyes. Assessing the threat. Deciding you are not one. Disappearing again.
The clouds below shift. A gap opens. For a moment, you can see down through the white, into the valley. A green patchwork far below. A road like a thread. A river catching the sun. And then the gap closes and the view is gone, the cloud ocean sealing itself like it was never broken.
You sit down on a rock. Warm from the sun. The kind of warm that soaks through fabric and reaches your bones. Your legs are tired from the climb and the tiredness feels good. Earned. The meadow stretches around you, wind-swept and quiet. A butterfly passes, impossibly, at this altitude, riding the breeze.
The world is below. With its emails and traffic and noise. But you are not there. You are here. Above. In a place where the only sound is wind and the only demand is to breathe.
Breathe the thin, bright air. Let it fill the highest part of your lungs.
You earned this view.
