Impermanence and Peace
A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.
Everything changes. This truth, which Buddhism calls anicca (impermanence), is not a cause for sadness but a source of liberation.
When you sit in pain, knowing it will pass brings comfort. When anxiety grips you, knowing it is temporary brings courage. When joy arises, knowing it is fleeting brings appreciation.
In meditation, we witness impermanence directly. A sound begins and ends. A breath arises and dissolves. A thought appears and vanishes. Nothing stays.
This understanding transforms our relationship with experience. We stop desperately trying to hold onto pleasant moments and stop fearfully resisting difficult ones. We learn to surf the waves of change rather than fight the ocean.
Today, notice three things that change during your meditation. Watch them arise, exist for a moment, and pass away.
