Lying On The Floor

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

You are on the floor.

Flat on your back. Arms out. Legs somewhere. The ceiling above you, which is not a view you normally see, and right now it is the only thing in the world. The cool of the floor through your shirt. The heat of your own body pressing down into it.

Gravity feels earned right now. Like you have a new relationship with it. You worked against it for the last thirty, forty, sixty minutes, and now it is welcoming you back. Pulling you down gently into the ground.

Do not get up yet.

Feel your breath. It is still faster than normal. Your chest is rising and falling with purpose. Each inhale a little longer than the last, your body recalibrating itself, finding its way back to baseline. Let it. There is no rush.

Start with your hands. Open them. Palms up. Feel the air between your fingers. Notice the difference between the heat of your palms and the cooler air around them. These hands were gripping, pressing, lifting minutes ago. Now they are resting. Let them be completely, absolutely still.

Your arms. Heavy on the floor. The muscles of your biceps and forearms are warm, maybe tingling. The fibres are recovering. Rebuilding. Getting stronger, right now, in this stillness. The work was the stimulus. This rest is where the growth actually happens.

Your core. All those muscles you barely think about until they ache. They are releasing now. Layer by layer. The deep ones, the ones close to the spine, letting go. The surface ones, the ones that were holding everything tight, softening. You can feel the difference. Ten minutes ago, everything was braced. Now, it is melting.

Your legs. Heavy. Wonderfully heavy. Thighs, hamstrings, calves, all of them announcing their presence in that warm, used-up way that only comes from effort. Not pain, exactly. Acknowledgement. Your legs reminding you they exist, they work, they carried you through something.

And your back, flat against the floor. The spine decompressing. Vertebra by vertebra releasing the compression of standing, sitting, living upright. The floor is doing something for your back right now that nothing else can. Simply being flat, hard, and supportive.

This is the moment most people skip. They finish the last rep, grab their bag, move on to the next thing. But this is the moment. The transition between effort and recovery. Between doing and being. Between the version of you that was grinding and the version of you that gets to simply exist.

Your heart rate is settling. You can feel it slowing. Each beat becoming less urgent, more rhythmic. A drum going from a march to a lullaby. Your body trusting that the demand is over. Safety arriving, beat by beat.

Stay here another minute. Feel the floor. Feel the air. Feel the extraordinary machine you live inside, winding down, cooling, repairing, becoming ready for whatever comes next.

You did the work. This is the reward.
