Mantra Meditation
A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.
A mantra is a word or phrase repeated silently during meditation. It gives the mind something to do, preventing it from wandering endlessly.
How to practice:
1. Choose a mantra. Traditional options: "Om," "So Hum" (I am that), "Om Mani Padme Hum." Simple options: "Peace," "I am calm," "Here, now."
2. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Begin repeating your mantra silently in your mind.
3. Synchronize with breath if desired: think one word on the inhale, another on the exhale. "So" (inhale), "Hum" (exhale).
4. When thoughts arise, gently return to the mantra. No force, no frustration.
5. Practice for 10 to 20 minutes.
The mantra works by occupying the thinking mind, allowing deeper states of awareness to emerge. The specific word matters less than the repetition and the intention behind it.
