Memory Tree Forest
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
The first tree you touch shows you something you had forgotten.
Your hand on the bark. Rough, warm, alive. And then, behind your closed eyes, an image. Clear and vivid. A summer afternoon when you were very young. The exact colour of the sky. The exact sound of someone calling your name from a distance. The feeling, forgotten for decades, of running for the sheer joy of moving.
You pull your hand away. The image fades.
This is the forest of memories. Each tree holds one. Not its own memories. yours. Collected from the moments you lived but could not carry. The first few seconds of a dream. The shape of a cloud you once watched from a car window. The taste of something you ate only once, in a kitchen you will never return to. Everything your mind had to release to make room for the next moment. The trees kept it.
You step forward. The forest is old and deep and quiet. The trees are different species, different sizes, each one planted at the moment of the memory it holds. The oldest ones, near the centre, are enormous. Ancient trunks wrapped in moss and lichen, their canopies so high you cannot see where the leaves begin. These hold the earliest memories. The ones formed before language. Before conscious thought. The ones that shaped you before you knew you were being shaped.
Touch another. Gently. Press both palms against the smooth grey bark of a young birch. And there it is. A specific evening. Rain on a window. Music playing in another room. Someone you loved, sitting across from you, saying nothing important, and you, not knowing yet that this was the happiest you would be for a long time.
The memory does not bring sadness. In this forest, memories arrive without their weight. You can feel them without being crushed by them. Experience them the way you might watch a film. Present, moved, but safe. The tree holds the sharp edges. Gives you the warmth.
Deeper in the forest, a clearing. Sunlight reaching the floor in a wide, warm circle. In the centre, one tree. Larger than the others. Its trunk is silver-white and its leaves shimmer with a light that does not come from the sun. This tree holds the memory you have been looking for without knowing you were looking.
You do not need to touch it. Standing near it is enough. The memory arrives gently. A moment when you understood something about yourself that you later forgot. A moment of clarity. Brief. Quiet. The kind of understanding that does not come from thinking but from being still long enough for the truth to find you.
You remember it now. Not the details. The feeling. And the feeling is warm, and familiar, and it settles into your chest like something returning to where it was always meant to be.
The forest holds everything you could not carry. And it does not ask for anything in return.
Walk among your memories. Touch the ones that call to you. Leave the ones that do not.
