Midnight Market

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The lanterns appear first. One by one. In places where lanterns should not be.

Hanging from trees. Suspended from nothing. Resting on surfaces that were not there this morning. Paper lanterns, silk lanterns, lanterns of stained glass and carved wood and thin, translucent shell. Each one glowing with a light that flickers but never goes out, even when the wind gusts between the stalls.

The midnight market has arrived. It comes once a year. Nobody knows exactly when. You simply feel it. A change in the air. A scent of spice and smoke and something sweet that does not belong to this season. You follow it. And there it is.

The market fills a square that is normally empty. Stalls pressed together, canopied in fabrics of deep red and midnight blue and gold. Each one lit from within. Each one tended by a seller who knows exactly what they are selling and exactly what it is worth, even if you do not.

The first stall sells scents. Not perfumes. scents. Bottled in tiny glass vials with handwritten labels. The afternoon you first fell in love. The morning after a snowfall in a city you once called home. The smell of your grandmother's kitchen at Christmas. You lift one to your nose and the memory is so vivid it makes your eyes water. You set it down. You do not need to buy it. The smelling was enough.

The next stall sells sounds. Sealed in small boxes, like music boxes, each one containing a single, captured sound. Rain on a tent. A particular bird at a particular dawn. Laughter from a dinner that happened years ago. You wind one and the sound fills the air around you, private, intimate, heard only by you.

Food. A stall with no sign, tended by a figure whose face is mostly shadow. Dumplings that steam in the cold air. A soup you cannot identify but that smells of warmth itself. Small cakes dusted with something that sparkles faintly, like edible starlight. You eat one. It tastes of comfort and the specific happiness of having nowhere to be and all night to be there.

Deeper into the market. The stalls become stranger. More personal. A woman selling maps of places that exist only when you dream them. A man offering single words, rare ones, words for feelings that your language does not cover. The perfect word for the sadness of a sunset you watched alone. The word for the joy of being lost in exactly the right way.

Music drifts from somewhere. Not from a specific direction. It is in the market. Part of its fabric. A stringed instrument playing something slow and old. The kind of music that requires no attention but rewards it. People drift with the music, moving between stalls, unhurried, faces lit golden.

At the very centre, a stall selling nothing. An empty table. A chair. And an invitation, written in letters that only you can read: sit. rest. the market is the gift. the sitting is the treasure.

So you sit. And you watch the market move around you. The lights. The faces. The impossible things for sale. The ordinary miracle of a place that exists for one night and asks nothing except that you be here.

Morning will come. The market will vanish. But the sweetness will stay.
