Norwegian Fjord At Dusk

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The walls of rock rise straight from the water. Vertical. A thousand feet. Maybe more.

You are in a fjord. A canyon carved by glaciers during the last ice age, now flooded by the sea. The water beneath you is dark and deep, hundreds of meters of cold Atlantic ocean filling a space that was once solid ice. The cliffs on either side are so close you feel you could reach out and touch them, though they are a quarter mile away. Scale deceives in a place like this. Everything is bigger than it appears.

And at dusk, everything is gilded.

The sun is low behind the western cliff. Its light catches only the very top of the eastern wall, turning the rock face gold while the rest remains in deep blue shadow. The line between light and dark is sharp and descending slowly. As the sun drops, the gold retreats upward, climbing the cliff face, until only the summit catches the light. Then nothing. And the entire fjord is in shadow.

But the sky above is still burning. Orange and pink and a violet so deep it is almost black. The narrow strip of sky visible between the cliff walls is like a river of colour overhead. Northern sky. The kind that lingers. Dusk will last an hour here, maybe longer, the colours shifting so slowly you cannot see it happening, only notice it has happened.

The water is a mirror. Perfect, absolute stillness. The cliffs are reflected in the dark surface so clearly that if you turned the image upside down, you could not tell which was real. A world doubled. Rock and sky and the narrow channel between them, duplicated in the black water.

A waterfall descends the far cliff. White against dark rock. It falls hundreds of feet in a single drop and the sound reaches you a second later, a constant, rushing whisper. Where it hits the fjord, a small circle of foam radiates outward and dissolves. The water is so deep that the freshwater from the falls simply disappears into the Atlantic beneath without trace.

A bird calls. A single note, high and clear, echoing between the walls. The echo repeats three, four times, each one softer, until the sound fades into the hiss of the waterfall. Then silence again.

The temperature is dropping. The air coming off the water is cool and carries the smell of the ocean. Salt and depth. The smell of water that connects to every ocean, every current, every shore on the planet. This is not a lake. This is the sea, reaching inland, filling the space the ice left behind.

The first star appears in the narrow band of sky above. Then a second. The dusk is deepening. The reflections in the water shift from gold to silver to something darker, the cliffs becoming shadows of themselves, the fjord becoming a canyon of darkness and quiet.

This place was ancient before the word ancient existed. It will outlast every person alive. And tonight, in this narrow passage between cliffs and water, the silence holds you the way the walls hold the sea.

Let it hold you.
