Rio Hillside At Night
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
Below you, Rio spreads itself across its geography with the extravagance of a city that knows it is beautiful.
From the hillside you can see the whole logic of it. The mountains that the city grew between, because it had to, the Atlantic on one side and the granite peaks pressing the neighbourhoods into their narrow coastal valleys. From up here the architecture looks intentional in its density, the buildings packed into the available spaces with the necessity-born creativity of a city that has always had to use every meter.
The warm night air. Rio's air even at night carries the ocean. Not just the smell but the temperature: a warmth that is never quite summer and never quite night, the Atlantic moderating the city's climate with the particular thoroughness of a very large body of very warm water.
The lights of the city below. The white lines of the Zona Sul streets running toward the shore, the familiar curves of Copacabana and Ipanema visible from here, the sand caught between the darkness of the ocean and the light of the buildings. The ocean, barely visible, a darker darkness at the edge of the lit shore.
Music rising from somewhere below. Among the hillside communities, the sound carries easily. A sound system somewhere, not close enough to intrude, far enough to be beautiful, the bass of something that is unmistakably from here, from this city's specific musical genealogy that produced some of the most celebrated music of the twentieth century and has not stopped.
Someone at the house beside you on this hillside path has their door open. A ceiling fan. A television showing something. The domestic detail of it, the ordinary evening in an extraordinary place, which is what all extraordinary places are to the people who live in them: the setting for ordinary evenings.
The smell of frying something from a kitchen window. The sound of conversation. Children somewhere lower on the hill, their voices carrying in the night air the way children's voices carry, lighter, faster, higher.
Look out at the city and understand what you are seeing. This hillside has been inhabited by people who built here when nowhere else was available to them, who built it with what they had, and turned it into a place with the alchemy that humans perform everywhere they stay long enough. Community. Colour. Music. The architecture of permanence built from impermanence.
The Christ statue, if you can see it, lit on its hill above the city. The arms spread. The city below it, completely itself, unruly and alive and lit and singing.
This view. The particular combination of mountain and sea and city and light and warm air and music from somewhere and children somewhere and the smell of cooking and the city doing all of its evening things that a city of this size does simultaneously.
There is nowhere on earth quite like this hillside, this city, this night.
Stay in it as long as you can. These specific two hours do not repeat.
