Salt Flat At Sunrise

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

Flat. In every direction. Perfectly, impossibly flat.

The surface stretches to every horizon in a sheet of cracked white hexagons. Salt crystals, dried and tessellated, forming a pattern so regular it looks designed. But nothing designed this. Just chemistry and evaporation and time.

There is nothing here. No trees. No bushes. No structures. No birds. Nothing vertical. Nothing that casts a shadow except you. Just a white plane meeting a coloured sky, and the line between them so clean it could cut paper.

And the sunrise is happening.

It does not arrive gradually here. It erupts. The sky at the eastern horizon goes from deep blue to a band of orange so intense it looks like the atmosphere is on fire. Above the orange, pink. Above the pink, violet. Above the violet, the deep remaining blue of night, still holding a few stars.

And all of it is reflected.

A thin layer of water covers parts of the salt flat. Shallow enough to wade through. Still enough to be a perfect mirror. And in this mirror, the sky is doubled. Above you, sunrise. Below you, sunrise. You are standing in the middle of a sphere of colour, the boundary between sky and ground erased, floating in a world that is all sky.

The silence is total. Not almost total. total. There is no wind. No insects. No distant traffic. No hum of any kind. If you hold your breath, the silence is so absolute it becomes a sound of its own. A ringing in the ears. The auditory equivalent of staring into a bright light. Your senses are reaching for something and finding nothing.

Your footsteps make the only sound. A soft crunch of salt crystals. The gentle splash of shallow water. Each step sends tiny ripples across the mirror surface, distorting the reflected sky for a moment before it settles back to perfect stillness.

The sun clears the horizon. A sliver of molten gold. Then more. Then a full disc, pouring light across the flat. The white surface ignites. Blinding. Overwhelming. The salt catches every photon and throws it back. You squint and the whole world becomes a field of light with no shape, no feature, nothing except brightness.

This is what the earth looks like when it simplifies itself to the most basic elements. Flat ground. Open sky. Light and salt and water. No ornament. No complexity. Just geometry and colour and the staggering fact of the planet spinning into another sunrise, the same way it has every morning for four and a half billion years.

Stand here, in the middle of nothing. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face. The cool of the water around your ankles. The perfect, absolute quiet.

There is nowhere more empty. And nowhere more full.
