Self-Compassion in Difficulty
A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.
When meditation gets hard, when the mind is restless, the body aches, or emotions arise, self-compassion is your greatest tool.
Meditation teacher Kristin Neff teaches three pillars of self-compassion:
Self-kindness: Speak to yourself as you would a good friend. Be gentle, not harsh.
Common humanity: Remember that all humans struggle. You are not broken, you are human.
Mindfulness: Observe difficulty without exaggerating it. Notice it as a passing weather pattern, not permanent.
When you feel frustration during meditation, pause and place your hand on your heart. Take a breath and say: "This is hard right now, and that's okay. I am doing my best."
Compassion transforms your meditation from another place where you're hard on yourself into a sanctuary of kindness.
