The Airport Before Dawn

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The airport is almost empty.

It is that hour. The one where the night shift is ending and the morning shift has not quite started. The lights are on, because airport lights are always on, but the usual roar of people has been replaced by something else. Silence with edges. The hum of air conditioning. The distant beep of a cleaning machine moving slowly down a corridor nobody is walking through.

You are here. Between places. Not home, not yet somewhere else. Not awake, not quite asleep. Sitting in a chair designed for nobody, holding a cup of bad coffee or no coffee at all, and watching the departure board cycle through cities you may never visit.

There is a specific loneliness to this. The airport loneliness. It is not the sad kind, necessarily. It is the kind that comes from being temporarily anonymous. Nobody here knows your name. Nobody needs anything from you. Your phone is full of a life that belongs to a different time zone, a different version of the day. Here, in this terminal, you are just... a person. With a bag. Waiting.

And there is a specific freedom in it too. The same freedom. The freedom of being between. Not yet responsible for wherever you are going. No longer responsible for wherever you left. Just here. In this strange, fluorescent, nowhere-in-particular.

Look around, even if just in your mind. The gate agent checking something behind the counter. A cleaner pushing a mop in slow, practiced arcs. Someone sleeping across three chairs with their coat as a blanket, their boarding pass sticking out of their pocket. A pilot walking past with the quiet confidence of someone who does this every day.

Each of them has a story that intersects with this building for a few hours and then disperses. Thousands of stories, every day, passing through these corridors, these gates, these terminals. All of them briefly sharing the same air and the same bad lighting before scattering to different corners of the world.

There is something beautiful about that. The temporary nature of it. Nothing here is permanent. Not the crowd. Not the emptiness. Not you.

Through the windows, the sky is changing. That deep black softening to something bluer. The first suggestion of dawn. Aircraft parked on the tarmac like sleeping animals, lights blinking slowly. The ground crew moving in patterns that make sense to nobody watching from inside.

Your flight will board eventually. The day will start. The between will end. You will become a person with a destination again, with expectations and plans and a schedule.

But for now, you are nobody going nowhere. And there is something in that feeling, a lightness, a freedom, that is worth sitting with for just another minute.

Breathe the recycled air. Drink the bad coffee. Let the departure board glow.

You are between. And between is its own kind of beautiful.
