The Beginner's Mind

A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.

In Zen Buddhism, there is a concept called Shoshin, or beginner's mind. It means approaching every experience with openness, eagerness, and freedom from preconceptions.

When we meditate with a beginner's mind, we sit as if for the first time. We notice our breath with fresh curiosity. We observe thoughts without labeling them as good or bad.

The expert's mind says, "I already know this." The beginner's mind says, "I wonder what will happen today."

Even after years of practice, approach each session with wonder. Your breath today is not last Tuesday's breath. Your mind today carries different textures. Every sit is genuinely new.

The paradox: the more you know about meditation, the more important it becomes to forget what you know and just sit.
