The Inner Sanctuary

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

Go in. All the way in.

Not the surface level. Past the noise and the tasks and the face you wear and the voice you use for the world. Further. Further than the stories you tell about yourself. Further than the history. Further than the exhaustion.

Keep going. There is a place that has never been disturbed by any of it.

It is your sanctuary. Not built by effort. Not earned by behaviour or achievement. Not conditional on anything. It has been here since before you knew about yourself. It will be here after every version of you finishes its work. It is the part of you that is simply there. Present. Quiet. Entirely undamaged.

Arrive here. Some people find a room. Some find a landscape. Some find light, pure and directionless, the kind of light that is not coming from anywhere specific but is everywhere. Whatever the sanctuary offers as its form, let it be that. The mind knows its own topography. It will show you the right form if you do not force it.

Sit down. Or lie down. Or simply be. The sanctuary has no furniture requirement. The only requirement is your presence. Which is the thing that is always already here.

Notice what this place is free of. Judgment. Urgency. Comparison. The constant evaluation of whether you are doing enough, being enough, performing well enough. None of that can find you here. It exists at the surface. You are all the way in.

What is present here instead? Something quieter. Something that does not use words. A knowing that pre-exists language. The kind of stillness that is not emptiness but fullness, full of something that requires effort to name and does not need naming.

This is what spiritual traditions have pointed toward through every metaphor and practice they have developed across every human culture. Not the specific metaphor. The place the metaphor aims at. The inner stillness. The being that is prior to all doing. The you that was there before your first thought about yourself.

You are here now. Right now. This is not performance or achievement. It is just noticing that you have always been here, that this centre has always existed, that all the movement of your days has been happening around this stillness which was never absent.

Breathe. From here. From the centre of things. The breath of someone who has arrived home.

You can bring everything from out there in here. The difficulties, the open questions, the people you love and the people you struggle with. Brought in here, they all look different. They look survivable. They look small against the size of what is here.

Rest in this. The sanctuary does not close.

You have always been able to find your way back. You found it now.

Stay. You are home.
