The Observer Within
A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.
Who is it that watches your thoughts? Behind the endless chatter of the mind, there is a silent witness. This observer is your deeper self, the awareness behind all experience.
In meditation, we cultivate this witness perspective. Instead of being swept along by thoughts and emotions, we step back and watch them unfold, the way you might sit on a riverbank watching the water flow past.
You are not your thoughts. You are the one who notices thoughts. You are not your emotions. You are the one who feels emotions arise and pass. This distinction is the foundation of inner freedom.
Practice: Close your eyes. Notice a thought. Now notice that you noticed the thought. That second layer of awareness, the noticing of your noticing, is the observer. Rest there.
