The Quiet Hour
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
There is an hour in the morning that nobody talks about.
It happens before the alarms in other rooms go off. Before the kettle. Before the first text message arrives. Before the world remembers you exist and starts asking things of you. It is the hour between sleep and life. And most people sleep right through it.
But not you. Not today.
Today you are here. Awake. And the house is still.
Feel that stillness. Not as absence but as presence. The walls around you are holding a particular quality of silence right now that will not exist again once the day starts. The air is different at this hour. Cooler, maybe. Softer. The sounds are different too. Not the sounds of activity. The sounds of rest. A clock ticking somewhere. The fridge humming its low, steady note. Maybe rain outside, if you are lucky. Maybe just the deep nothing of a world still asleep.
This hour does not belong to your job. It does not belong to your family, your partner, your responsibilities. It does not belong to your phone, your inbox, your feed.
It belongs to you.
And what you do with it matters more than you think. Not because you need to be productive. The opposite. Because this is the one window in your day where nothing is required.
So do not fill it. Resist the reflex to reach, to check, to plan. Just be in it.
Breathe slowly. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Feel your body in the bed, in the chair, wherever you are. The specific texture of this moment. The temperature. The weight of your own hands resting in your lap or at your sides.
If thoughts come, let them. They will be quieter at this hour. Gentler. Like animals coming to drink at a stream. They arrive, they linger, they move on. You do not need to follow them.
If feelings come, let those too. Sometimes the early morning is when the truest things surface. The things that get buried under busyness all day. A sadness you have not looked at. A hope you have not spoken aloud. A gratitude so simple it almost embarrasses you.
None of it needs action right now. It just needs space. And that is what this hour is. Space.
In a little while, the house will wake. Doors will open. Voices will start. The rhythm of the day will pick up and carry you with it, the way it always does. And that is fine. That is life.
But you will move into it differently. Because you were here first. In the quiet. In the stillness. In the version of the morning that belongs to nobody but you.
That is not wasted time. That is the most valuable time you have.
Guard it. Come back to it tomorrow.
It will be here.
