The Strange Love Of Exhaustion

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

You are so tired that something strange has happened.

You have gone past the edge of exhaustion, past the frustration, past the counting of hours you did not sleep... and arrived somewhere else. Somewhere quieter. A place where you are too tired for worry. Too tired for planning. Too tired for anything except this. This exact, unrepeatable moment.

And there is a clarity here. A strange, exhausted, stripped-down clarity.

You are sitting or lying or standing, and the baby is close, and the world outside feels very far away. Your to-do list has gone silent. Your ambitions have gone quiet. Your social media comparisons and life goals and everything that usually occupies the noisy part of your brain... all of it has faded. Because your body simply does not have the energy for it.

What is left? Just the present. Just now.

And now is actually quite beautiful, if you let yourself see it.

The weight of a small body against your chest. The way their hand rests, open, trusting. The sound of their breathing, rapid and light, like a bird's heart. The smell of their head, that specific, indescribable new-person smell that evolution designed to make you fall in love despite the hardest months of your life.

This is what people mean when they talk about presence. Not the meditation retreat version. The three-in-the-morning, haven't-showered, wearing-yesterday's-clothes version. The version where you are too exhausted to be anywhere other than exactly where you are, and it turns out that exactly where you are is extraordinary.

They will not be this small again. You know that, even though it is hard to believe right now. This weight, this warmth, this specific stage of tiny and dependent and endlessly needing... it is already leaving. Slowly. Day by day. They are growing even as you hold them. And one day, when they are bigger, the thing you will remember most is not the tiredness. It is this.

The night. The quiet. The two of you, alone in a sleeping world, existing in a bubble of warmth and breath and something too deep for the word love to contain.

So let yourself feel it. All of it. The exhaustion and the tenderness. The frustration and the awe. The desire for sleep and the gratitude for being the one who is here right now.

They are not contradictions. They are the full picture. The real, honest, unfiltered experience of giving your entire self to something that matters.

You will sleep again. Not tonight, probably. But eventually. And when you do, this strange, tired, beautiful version of love will be waiting for you on the other side. Changed, but not gone. Never gone.

For now, just breathe. With them. At the same slow pace.

And let the world outside keep sleeping.
