The Threshold Of A Decision

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

You are standing at a door.

Not a real one, maybe. Or maybe it is. A literal door, a conversation, a phone call, an application, a yes or a no. Something that, once you step through it, changes the shape of what comes next. You cannot see the other side clearly. You never can. That is what makes it a threshold.

And you are standing here. Not yet through. Not yet turned away. Just... at the edge.

This is one of the most uncomfortable places a human being can stand. The before. The almost. The here-but-not-yet-there. Your body knows it. There is tension in your stomach. A restlessness in your hands. Your mind is cycling through scenarios, pro and con, what if and but what if, trying to calculate an answer that calculation cannot give.

So stop calculating. Just for a moment.

Breathe. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Not to make a decision. Just to be here, at the threshold, without needing to move in either direction yet.

There is information in this place. In the hesitation itself. It is not weakness. It is your whole self, every part of you, the logical part and the intuitive part and the scared part and the hopeful part, all trying to speak at once.

What is the logical part saying? Write it down in your mind. The reasons for. The reasons against. The evidence. The practicalities.

Now, what is the intuitive part saying? Not reasons. A feeling. A pull. A knowing that lives somewhere below thought. If you had to point to where it lives in your body, where would you point?

And the scared part. What is it afraid of? Name the fear. Specifically. Not the vague, ambient dread. The specific thing. Once you name it, it loses some of its power. It goes from a shadow filling the whole room to a single, identifiable shape.

And the hopeful part. What are you hoping for on the other side of this door? What does the best outcome feel like? Not look like. feel like. Can you feel it in your body right now?

You do not have to decide today. You do not have to decide right now. Thresholds are patient. They wait. But the information you need is already inside you, scattered across these different voices, and the only way to hear them is to stand still long enough to let them each speak.

Take another breath. Deep.

Trust yourself more than you are trusting yourself right now. You have stood at doors before. You have walked through them. You have survived every single one. You will survive this one too. Whether you walk through or turn away.

The threshold is not a test. It is just a moment. And you are allowed to take your time.
