The Wise Elder

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

There is a path. And the path leads somewhere you have not been yet.

Walk it. Whatever the path is made of, whatever the landscape around it, let it be easy walking, the kind of gentle path that requires nothing difficult from the body. The path belongs to the visualization, which belongs to you, so it is the path you would make if asked to design a path.

The path leads to a place of rest. A clearing, or a garden, or a room with a fire, or a cliff above the sea where there is enough shelter to sit. You arrive at it and it is warm and the air is still and something about this place says: someone is coming. Someone is already here.

You see them. Older than you. Much older, perhaps. Their face has the quality that years of living genuinely give, not aged in the merely physical sense but deepened. The kind of face that has been through seasons you cannot imagine and come out the other side not hardened but softened. Easier, not harder.

They welcome you without ceremony. Pathos would reduce this. Just: you are welcome. Sit down if you want. There is time.

This is an elder who was once you. Or contains you. Or has always been somewhere ahead on the road you are walking, waiting for the time you would arrive. The tradition of this figure runs through many cultures, many ways of understanding the inner world: the guide, the elder, the deep self that has not yet spoken because you have not yet arrived at the place where it meets you.

What do you want to ask? You may have something. A decision you cannot make alone. A fear you have been carrying that feels too heavy for its actual size. A question about direction, or about something you have done, or about whether you are enough for the things being asked of you.

Ask it. Simply, plainly. The elder is not here for performance. Ask the thing as you would ask it at three in the morning to someone who already knows you.

The elder listens. Really listens, the way people who are not preparing their answer while you talk listen. Their eyes on you. Their presence full.

Then their answer. Not necessarily in words. Perhaps in a gesture. Perhaps in a silence that, coming from them, communicates more than speech. Perhaps in a few simple sentences that arrive with the weight of things that have been known a long time and are being given freely now.

The answer may not be the answer you expected. The deep self rarely confirms what we want to hear. More often it says what we already know and have been avoiding. Gently. Without accusation. Just: you already know this. And you do.

Thank them. They do not need it but the act of thanks is good for you. The acknowledgement of having received something. Then the path back, your step lighter by the measure of whatever was given.

The elder stays. They are always in this clearing. You can come back. The door of this inner place is always open.

Walk back. But carry what was given.
