Thoughts Are Not Facts

A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.

One of meditation's greatest gifts is the realization that thoughts are not facts. They are mental events, arising and passing like clouds in the sky.

Before meditation, we often believe every thought: "I'm not good enough," "This will never work," "Something bad is going to happen." We treat these thoughts as truth.

Through practice, we learn to step back and observe: "Ah, there's a worry thought. Interesting." We don't need to believe it, argue with it, or push it away. We simply notice it.

This shift from being inside our thoughts to observing our thoughts is transformative. It creates a space between stimulus and response where freedom lives.

Next time a stressful thought arises, try saying to yourself: "I notice I'm having the thought that..." This small reframing changes everything.
