Trataka: Candle Gazing Meditation
A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.
Trataka is an ancient practice of steady gazing that calms the mind and strengthens concentration.
How to practice:
1. Choose a battery candle or a steady object at a comfortable distance. Dim the room. Sit comfortably.
2. Gaze softly at the flame. Do not stare intensely. Let your eyes rest on the brightest part of the flame.
3. Blink naturally. Close your eyes or stop whenever your eyes feel tired or uncomfortable.
4. With eyes closed, you will see the afterimage of the flame on the inside of your eyelids. Focus on this inner flame until it fades.
5. Open your eyes and repeat. Practice for 5 to 15 minutes.
The object is simply an anchor for attention. This practice does not treat sleep or eye conditions.
