Tropical Rainforest At Dawn

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The forest is waking up.

Not all at once. In layers. Like an orchestra tuning, one section at a time. First the insects. They have been going all night, but their pitch changes with the light. A shift in frequency. A new urgency. Then the frogs, falling quiet as the darkness fades, handing the night shift over to the day.

Then the birds. One bird. A single call from somewhere high in the canopy. Tentative. Testing the dawn. And then another answers. And another. Within minutes, the air is full. Calls and songs and whistles and trills, layered over each other in a density of sound that is overwhelming and beautiful and completely, perfectly wild.

You are standing on the forest floor. The air is warm. Warm and wet. You can feel moisture on your skin the moment you stop moving. It drapes over you like a cloth. Each breath is heavy with it, thick with oxygen and the smell of green growth and decomposition happening at the same time.

The canopy above is so high and so dense that the sky is reduced to fragments. A puzzle of green and grey and the occasional slice of brightening orange where the sun is trying to push through. Vines hang from the tallest branches, thick as ropes, some flowering with colours so vivid they look artificial. A flash of red. A burst of yellow. Colour in a world of green.

The light arrives in stages. First a general grey brightening. Then, as the sun clears the horizon, shafts. Beams of gold slicing through gaps in the canopy, catching the mist, the humidity made visible. They look solid. Like columns of light you could lean against.

Something moves. A flash of colour in the trees. A bird. Iridescent. Green and blue and impossible. It darts between branches with a flight pattern that seems to defy physics, here and then there, too fast to follow. You catch the moment it lands, the branch barely moving under its weight. It tilts its head. Looks at you with one eye. Decides you are boring. Flies away.

The ground beneath your feet is soft with leaf litter. Leaves the size of dinner plates. Decomposing into soil so rich it is almost black. Everything here is in a state of becoming something else. Leaves becoming soil. Soil feeding trees. Trees feeding creatures. Creatures feeding the soil. A cycle so complete and so ancient that the forest runs itself without any help.

A stream crosses the path. Shallow and clear, running over stones smoothed by thousands of years of water. The sound it makes is the brightest sound here. A clean, bubbling note underneath the symphony of animal calls.

The heat is building. The day is arriving in full now. The concert is reaching its peak. And you are here. Surrounded by more life per square metre than exists anywhere else on earth. Every surface alive. Every inch occupied.

Breathe the thick air. Let the sound wash over you. You are inside the engine of the planet.
