Tuscan Village Evening

An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.

The stone keeps the heat all afternoon and gives it out in the evening. This is Tuscany's gift.

The village is small. A thousand people, perhaps, or fewer, living in the stone houses that have been on this hill since the medieval period adjusted them into their current form. The walls are warm to the touch even now, even as the sun is low, because they have been receiving heat since nine in the morning and their mass takes hours to release it.

Walk through the main street, which is a lane by most standards. The cobblestones polished by centuries of feet into something nearly smooth at the centre, rougher at the edges where less feet have gone. The buildings on both sides so close you could touch both with outstretched arms. The sky above a stripe of amber.

The smell. Garlic warming in olive oil. The specific smell of Italian cooking as it happens, which is not the same as the smell of Italian food when it is done, and which is better than either. It comes from an open window, from a kitchen three floors up, from a woman who has been cooking this sauce the same way her grandmother cooked it, the recipe not written because it does not need to be written, it is in the hands.

The enoteca. Someone has put tables and chairs outside. They are full. The hour before dinner, the aperitivo hour, people sitting with a glass that is the local wine, which you could not find outside this valley because no one makes it that far, with the olives and the bread that come with it because of course they do.

Conversations in Italian that you may or may not understand, but the frequency of which you understand completely. This is the sound of people who have seen each other every day for forty years and are still finding things to tell each other, which is the real measure of a place.

The view from the village edge. Standing at the wall where the village ends and the valley drops away. The vineyards on the slopes below, the rows running in parallel down the hill. A farmhouse below, smoke from its chimney. Cypress trees at the edges of the roads running away in lines, the way the Tuscans have always arranged their trees, for wind and for beauty simultaneously.

The sun is fully behind the hills now. The sky is doing its best, lavender and rose above the ridge. The warm light that was falling on the stone has become the warm light coming from within the stone. The village glowing from its own stored heat.

The church bell. The same time it has rung for centuries. The sound of it spreading across the valley and returning, reflected off the slope on the far side.

Every evening in this village has been like this one. Different years, different faces, the same stone, the same bell, the same cooking, the same wine. The continuity of it. The way that living in one place for many generations builds something that has no single creator and belongs to everyone who is here.

Sit at one of the tables if there is a space. Someone will bring you something. You do not need to speak much Italian. The gesture of sitting is understood.

Be in the evening. Let the stone warm your back.
