Walking Meditation

A reflection from the Mind Sanctuary phone app.

Meditation does not require sitting still. Walking meditation brings mindful awareness to one of our most common activities.

How to practice: Find a quiet path, about 20 steps long. Stand at one end. Feel your feet on the ground.

Begin walking slowly. Notice the lifting of each foot, the movement through space, the placing of each foot back down. Feel the shift of weight from one leg to the other.

When your mind wanders, gently return attention to the sensations of walking. The pressure of the ground beneath your feet. The movement of your legs. The gentle sway of your body.

Walking meditation is especially helpful when sitting meditation feels difficult. It channels restless energy while maintaining mindful presence. Practice for 10 to 20 minutes.
