You Did Enough Today
An imagined scene from Mind Sanctuary.
You did enough today.
I know. It does not feel like it. There is a list in your head of things that did not get done. The laundry. The email. The call you were supposed to make. The meal you planned to cook but replaced with whatever was fastest. The version of today you imagined this morning, the one where you were organised and calm and on top of everything... that version did not happen.
But this version did. And this version counts.
You kept a small human alive today. Fed, changed, held, soothed. You responded to cries that had no clear cause. You interpreted needs that were communicated through nothing but sound and movement. You gave your body, your energy, your patience. And when the patience ran out, you kept going anyway.
Do you understand what that is?
That is not a failed day. That is a day spent doing the hardest job there is. The one with no breaks, no performance reviews, no recognition for the ten thousandth time you picked up the thing they threw on the floor.
The house does not look the way you want. Fine. It is shelter. It is warm. The people in it are alive and cared for. That is a house doing its job.
You did not exercise. Fine. Your body moved all day. Rocking, lifting, carrying, bending, pacing. You did not need a workout. You were the workout.
You snapped at someone. Maybe your partner. Maybe an older child. Maybe yourself, inside your own head. Fine. You are running on fumes. Grace does not require perfection. It requires trying again, and you will try again tomorrow.
None of this takes away from the fact that today was enough. You were enough.
There is a kind of love that only exhausted people know. The love that keeps going after the capacity to feel it has been temporarily used up. The love that shows up at three in the morning not because it feels warm and wonderful but because the body walks to the crib anyway. That love is not lesser for being tired. It is greater. It costs more. And the cost is what makes it extraordinary. The people who are capable of this kind of love, who keep showing up even when they are empty, are some of the most remarkable people there are. You may not feel remarkable right now. You may feel like someone who forgot to reply to an important message today. You are both.
Close your eyes for a moment.
Take one breath that is just for you. Not for anyone else. Not to calm down for someone else's sake. Just for you. A selfish breath. You deserve one.
Feel the weariness in your body. It is real and it is heavy and it is asking you one thing. To stop. To rest. To let the day be finished, imperfect as it was.
So finish it. Put it down. The whole beautiful, exhausting, messy day.
Tomorrow is another one. And you will meet it the way you met this one. Imperfectly. Completely. With everything you have, even when everything you have feels like not very much.
It is always more than you think.
Rest now.
